The Blue Bicolor Ragdoll
Blue bicolor is a color and pattern variation of the Ragdoll cat breed, which originated in the 1960s. The blue bicolor Ragdoll is truly breathtaking. Their bicolor pattern paints a grey mask on their faces, perfectly framing their large doe eyes and rose pink noses. They are true “dolls” in every sense of the word!
Blue Bicolor Ragdoll Characteristics
There are a few features that set apart the Blue Bicolor Ragdoll from other Ragdoll patterns and colors. These attributes make it truly special and captivating.
Inverted White “V” Mask: Notably, the Blue Bicolor Ragdoll has a mask on their face that resembles an upside down “V”. The Ragdoll breed standard prefers for this mask to be as symmetrical as possible.
Blue Point Color: The pointed areas on a Blue Bicolor Ragdoll are a stunning grey color, specifically referred to as blue. Pointed areas of color include the ears, face and tale. The saddle (or back) of a blue bicolor Ragdoll should also be shaded in blue, but it will not be quite as dark as the pointed areas.
A Lot of White: The bicolor pattern has the most white on it of all the Ragdoll patterns. White is found on the belly, legs and face of a blue bicolor Ragdoll.
Pink Nose: The blue bicolor Ragdoll is quite famous for their cute pink nose! It adds such a soft and delicate feel to them.
Genetics of a Blue Bicolor Ragdoll
In the Ragdoll breeding world, “blue” is just a fancy term for the color grey and the proper genetic term for blue is actually “dilute”. If a Ragdoll is blue bicolor, this means that it carries two autosomal recessive dilution genes, turning the standard black seal color into a lighter grey. Scientifically, when two dilution genes are inherited from parent cats to a kitten, this trait causes uneven dispersal of pigment in the hair shaft, producing a diluted or lightened appearance.
Alleles: D = Full Color, d = Dilute
Ragdoll cats with D/D genotype will be seal.
Ragdoll cats with D/d genotype will be seal but will carry the blue dilution gene.
Ragdoll cats with d/d genotype will be blue.
In order to produce a blue bicolor Ragdoll kitten, one parent Ragdoll needs to be blue and the other needs to carry the recessive dilution gene, or both Ragdoll parents need to carry the recessive dilution gene. If one Ragdoll parent does not carry dilute, none of the kittens will be blue since this gene needs to be inherited from both parents to express itself in a Ragdoll kitten.
Ethical Ragdoll breeders will do genetic testing on each of their Ragdoll breeding cats, which typically determines their genotype and whether or not they carry the blue dilution gene. This can help a breeder determine how to pair their Ragdoll cats in order to produce blue kittens.
If the genetics behind blue Ragdolls still seems complex to you, don’t feel alone. This is just a quick overview into how the blue gene is inherited to help you have a more basic understanding into how blue bicolor Ragdolls are genetically produced. It’s really quite fascinating!

Are Blue Bicolor Ragdolls Popular?
The blue bicolor Ragdoll is a very popular choice. It is one of the more sought-after Ragdoll Colors and Patterns and it’s easy to understand why. Blue Bicolor Ragdolls have charming pink noses that contrast their blue and white bunny coats beautifully. The blue coat color is also in perfect harmony with their stunning jewel blue eyes. Blue bicolor Ragdolls are lovely and elegant, drawing in many fans and admirers from around the world. The Ragdoll cat breed in general continues to soar in popularity and has been rated the top cat breed for many years by the Cat Fancier’s Association.
Are Blue Bicolor Ragdolls Rare?
Blue bicolor Ragdolls are not more rare than other Ragdoll colors. However, not all Ragdoll breeders choose to produce blue Ragdolls. Some breeders decide to only breed Ragdolls in the darker seal color. It can take extra work and planning for a breeder to ensure that they are able to produce the blue bicolor pattern in their breeding program. So, if you are specifically searching for a blue bicolor Ragdoll kitten, it is important to ask your potential breeder whether or not they can produce blue Ragdolls.
The Grey and White Ragdoll
A blue bicolor Ragdoll can be referred to as a grey and white Ragdoll in Layman’s terms. Many individuals who are unaware of the term blue bicolor may instead refer to a Ragdoll as grey and white. Remember that “blue” is just elaborate terminology for grey. 😉
What Eye Color does a Blue Bicolor Ragdoll Have?
All true Ragdoll cats and kittens have blue eyes. Because the Ragdoll is a pointed cat breed, it should never have any eye color other than blue. The specific eye color can vary from a light aqua to a deep navy blue, with diverse shades of cobalt and sapphire in between. If you see a Ragdoll cat or kitten being advertised with an eye color other than true blue, it is not a genuine Ragdoll.
How Much is a Blue Bicolor Ragdoll Kitten?
A blue bicolor Ragdoll kitten should not be any more expensive than other Ragdoll colors and patterns. The Price of a Blue Bicolor Ragdoll Kitten will vary between breeders, depending on various factors. At Pastel Ragdolls, our adorable blue bicolor Ragdoll kittens start at $3500.
Show Quality Blue Bicolor Ragdoll
A show quality blue bicolor Ragdoll will be near or perfectly marked. According to the TICA Ragdoll Breed Standard, the white inverted “V” on the face should be close to symmetrical and should not extend beyond the outer edge of the eye on either side. Spots of color in designated white areas, such as the back legs or paws of a blue bicolor Ragdoll, are allowed by the show standard.
Pet Quality Blue Bicolor Ragdoll
A pet quality blue bicolor Ragdoll usually has unique markings. This might include an obviously asymmetrical inverted “V” on the face, a spot of blue color on the chin or missing blue color on the ears. Also, if the inverted “V” extends beyond the outer edge of the eye on either side, then the Ragdoll should be evaluated as pet quality. Unique markings only add to the charm and character of a blue bicolor Ragdoll kitten.
Blue Bicolor Ragdoll vs. Blue Lynx Bicolor Ragdoll
Another popular Ragdoll option is the blue lynx bicolor, which looks very similar to the blue bicolor. Both are bicolor patterns, meaning they each will have the inverted white “V” mask on the face. The only difference between the two is that the blue lynx bicolor Ragdoll will have a lynx overlay, also referred to as tabby striping. This will add white liner around the eyes and ears and more variation in color throughout the coat due to banded hairs.
